Meet Dr. Aidan King

"Hello, my name is Dr. Aidan King and I'm standing to be the first Mayor of the North East.

"I have been a member of the Liberal Democrats for many years, having first joined in 2016. Since then, I have stood for Parliament in 2019, the European Parliament in 2019 also and was a City Councillor in Newcastle upon Tyne between 2018 and 2021. Representing residents as a Councillor was one of the proudest achievements of my life.

"I grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne and went to Heaton Manor High School to sixth form before going to Manchester Victoria University to study pharmacy. In the past, I managed retail businesses around the North East for several years before going back to university to study Medicine at Newcastle University Medical School. I am now working as a junior doctor at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

"Alongside my work as a doctor, I also lecturer in Pharmacology at Newcastle University.  I have also previously been on the board of a large (£50m by assets) housing charity, during which time we changed the strategic direction of the charity and senior staff. I was also on the finance working group.  Fundamentally, I have experience in complex teams, decision making, board level decision making and strategic planning.

"Outside of politics, I live in Newcastle with my two boys (7 and 4 years old), who I have half of the week. I also enjoy construction and I'm currently renovating my own home. I have previously built my own family home which was built to grade A energy standard - the highest standard possible. Finally, when I'm not working or involved in politics, I like to blow off steam by playing football weekly (5-a-side) with old friends."
