Lib Dems call for Sunderland Brexit Party candidate to resign over "horrifying" defence of trophy hunting

A Liberal Democrat candidate for the Houghton and Sunderland South constituency at the next General Election has called for his rival from the Brexit Party to resign after it came to light he supports trophy hunting.

Sunderland University academic Kevin Yuill was announced as the Brexit Party's candidate for the Houghton and Sunderland South constituency on 2nd August.

It has since come to light that Kevin Yuill wrote an article earlier this year entitled "in defence of trophy hunters" in which he states that "these animals are designed to elude hunters; we are designed to pursue them". He goes on to say that hunting "is about the instant camaraderie among hunters, telling the story (many times) in the bar. And yes, it is about the photo and the trophy on your wall to remind you of the shoot."

Several examples of trophy hunters posing for photos with dead lions, elephants, hippos, rhinos and other animals have spared widespread outrage around the world in recent years.

Local Liberal Democrat candidate for Houghton and Sunderland South said that Yuill's defence of trophy hunting was shocking and called for him to resign as a Parliamentary candidate.

Kevin Yuill also supports a relaxation of gun laws in the UK.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Houghton and Sunderland South Paul Edgeworth said:

“We are a national of animal lovers and Wearside is no different. I have absolutely no doubt that people across Sunderland, Houghton and Hetton will be completely disgusted at this shocking defence of the horrendous practice of rich people who take pleasure in killing magnificent animals for fun.

"It is really is horrifying and beyond belief that someone who wants to be an MP thinks trophy hunting is acceptable. It is nothing more than the senseless killing of magnificent animals just because people like Kevin Yuill want a story to tell in the pub and a photo for their mantelpiece and for their Facebook page.

"It's clear that anyone who thinks it is fine to allow animals to be killed for pleasure by the world's super rich isn't fit to represent the people of Houghton, Hetton and Sunderland in Parliament. He should resign immediately and if he won't the Brexit Party should remove him as their candidate."
