Lib Dems claim Gentoo more interested in profits that people as Sunderland investment plan slammed

A Sunderland councillor has claimed residents have “no faith” in social housing provider Gentoo as they launch a plan for upgrades, repairs and new affordable homes in the city.

The criticism came from Lib Dem councillor Stephen O’Brien who was speaking after Sunderland social housing provider Gentoo launched a £417 million plan to improve existing homes and build affordable houses across the city yesterday (13th May).

Wearside Lib Dems call for role of Mayor along with its £17,205 of allowances to be scrapped

As Labour prepares to announce their new mayor, Lib Dems have repeated their call for the role to be abolished.

It is planned that Wednesday’s meeting of the City Council will see a new mayor inaugurated to succeed Councillor Lynda Scanlan. The role is largely a ceremonial one: the two principal duties of the mayor are to a) chair meetings of the city council and b) to attend social functions on behalf of the city council. Currently the Mayor can claim a special responsibility allowance (SRA) of £17,205 plus expenses, whilst the Deputy Mayor may also claim a special responsibility allowance of £5735. Under the Council’s scheme of allowances, this money is paid in addition to basic allowance which all councillors may claim.

Lib Dem victory as 3-year long campaign to scrap free meals for Sunderland councillors is successful

Wearside Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news issued today (13 May) that Sunderland’s ruling Labour party will scrap controversial all-you-can-eat buffet meals for councillors after full council meetings.

The opposition Liberal Democrats were the first to propose scrapping the meal after Millfield councillor Niall Hodson was first elected in 2016.
